A short animated post celebrating Star Wars Day and my favorite droid – the Imperial Probe Droid.

Star Wars day is my favorite holiday and I wanted to challenge myself to make an animated post to celebrate. The Probe Droid is hands down my favorite droid in all of Star Wars, so I knew I had to pay tribute. The idea was for the probe droid to find the rebel celebration of Star Wars Day instead of the shield generator. The Darth Vader line, "That's it. The rebels are there." from that scene fit perfectly with my story.
The Probe Droid is entirely 2D animated by hand. I worked off of reference and placed all of the sensors as close as possible to their proper positions. I began to wish my favorite droid were an easier one to animate.
The end card mimics the probe droid's scan of the shield generator, on the star destroyer monitor. I had a blast recreating the UI form the probe droid monitor display in the film.
I started with a rough pass animating the many sensors of the droid rotating in their correct perspectives. Then, I cleaned up the lines in the inking stage. Finally, I added color and everything came to life in the compositing stage.
